Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex
An evolving master plan provided a vision for development for this regional destination on the edge of downtown Birmingham.
Birmingham, AL | 2000 - 2003
An evolving master plan provided a vision for development for this regional destination on the edge of downtown Birmingham. Dennis Reynolds provided urban design/landscape architecture services while a senior urban designer/principal with HOK S+V+E. Multiple design workshops with diverse stakeholders resulted in concepts that linked the convention/entertainment district with existing downtown attractions while providing an additional critical mass of restaurants, hotels, retail/entertainment and sports venues. Interactive workshops supported by individual and small group interviews provided diverse input and built consensus toward a unified vision for the expanding district. Special attention was given to providing a vision that did not compete with or harm existing entertainment, business and residential districts in the downtown. Internal building space planning was integrated with site characteristics to propose an efficient and seamless visitor experience.
